Rosalind Erwin began her musical studies as a child and made her conducting debut at the age of 13. She is an accomplished performer, having received her Bachelors Degree in Performance from the New School of Music in Philadelphia and her Masters in Performance from the prestigious Ester Boyer College of Music at Temple University where she studied with Anthony Gigliotti, Principal Clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Rosalind Erwin has appeared as clarinet soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the De Paul Chamber Orchestra and has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

 

Her passion for conducting brought her early acclaim and the appointment as Resident Conductor of the Composition Department at Temple University. She has studied with and been mentored by some of the great names in the conducting world. Among these have been Loren Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Leonard Slatkin, David Zinman, Joseph Barone, Sidney Rothstein and William Smith. She has been honored by the Leopold Stokowsky Memorial Conducting Competition and sponsored by the Rittenhouse Square Women’s Committee of the Philadelphia Orchestra. 

 

Rosalind Erwin has been highly acclaimed as a conductor and as an educator by the legendary composer and author Samuel Adler of the Eastman School of Music. She has been recipient of an NEA Fellowship and has served as Guest Lecturer and Celebrity Guest for the Philadelphia Orchestra Lecture/Luncheon Series. Rosalind Erwin was the founder and driving force behind Musica 2000 – The Symphony Orchestra,

 
 

where she commissioned works by emerging American composers, presenting world premieres both in the USA and abroad. Her guest conducting engagements have included orchestras in Portugal, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, as well as throughout the USA. She was featured conductor in 2003 during American Music Week with the Sophia Philharmonic in Bulgaria.

 

As Music Director of the Pottstown Symphony, Rosalind Erwin has championed new music and brought it into the mainstream of concert programming. Among other works, she has commissioned and premiered the overture simple from the Guggenheim Fellow and internationally respected composer, Robert Maggio, as well as Alabanza from Kile Smith. She conducted the regional premiere of Joan Tower’s Ford Foundation commissioned work, Made in America, in 2006.

 

Rosalind Erwin has brought the Pottstown Symphony to new artistic heights. Since 2005, Erwin and the orchestra have been featured numerous times on Philadelphia NPR station WHYY’s Symphony Space, hosted by Ed Cunningham.
