Richard Johnson

Born and raised on a farm in North Dakota, Bass Richard Johnson received his Bachelor of Music Degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, before being drafted into the military where he served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. Upon completion of his military commitment, Mr. Johnson returned to school and received his Master of Arts and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Iowa. He then joined the voice faculty of the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, serving as head of voice and opera for nine years before resigning to pursue a full-time singing career.

 

Mr. Johnson has sung over 75 leading bass roles with opera companies throughout the United States in a repertoire that includes many works by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi and Wagner. His large repertoire of mass, cantata, oratorio and orchestral works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Verdi have been performed with various national orchestras and choral groups. He has also sung extensively as a solo concert artist. Mr. Johnson is married to soprano Heidi Hayes and they reside in Bryn Mawr, PA with their son Nicholas and two Wagnerian Miniature Schnauzers, Sieglinde and Elisabeth.
